back2school

Can you hear that? It’s the distant ringing of school bells, signaling the start of another school year. Although Laguna Beach public schools don’t begin until after Labor Day on September 6, now is the time to start getting ready for what is always a busy time of year if you have kids. Here are some of our recommendations for starting the school year off right.

Stock up on school supplies

Don’t wait until the last minute to get everything on your child’s back-to-school supply list. There are plenty of places to find what you need, including standards like Target and Walmart. If your child has been bitten by the art bug (which wouldn’t be surprising here in Laguna Beach), Laguna Art Supply is the place to buy materials such as sketchbooks, brushes and paint. Another fun place to shop, especially for area teachers, is Lakeshore Learning in Laguna Hills, which carries educational toys and learning tools for all ages.

Shop for the best back-to-school wardrobe

Laguna Beach has some of the best boutiques in Southern California, and there are so many wonderful shops to take your kids to get them outfitted for the school year. Little Freebirds features earth-friendly clothing for infants and kids, while The Soul Project partners with local artists to create limited edition products and one-of-a-kind clothing lines for men, women and children. Or head over to the Newport Beach mall Fashion Island and spend an afternoon browsing all your favorite stores.

Learn in a real world classroom

Nothing enhances a child’s education more than experiencing in the real world what they are learning about in class, and Laguna Beach has a wealth of opportunities the whole family can enjoy. Explore marine life with a visit to our amazing tide pools, visit sea mammals and learn about their rescue and rehabilitation at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, or create art hands on at the Kids’ Art Studio on the third Sunday of every month at the Laguna Art Museum.

Relax and enjoy a day off

The school year can get so hectic with homework, sports schedules, after school activities and more, so make sure to set aside a little time now and again to kick back, relax and have some fun. Build sandcastles at any one of the city’s beautiful beaches, take a cruise to spot dolphins and whales in the ocean, take a hike in Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, go snorkeling and explore the ocean floor at Diver’s Cove, indulge in a scoop (or two!) of hand crafted gelato at Dolce Gelato, or simply relax and enjoy your beautiful Laguna Beach home. There are so many fun things to do in and around town, you’ll soon realize why living in Laguna Beach feels like being on vacation every day!
