There are few yacht clubs on the Pacific Coast which can boast of the combined facilities available to the membership of BYC. The recently enlarged clubhouse contains two decks of meeting rooms which include areas for the governing board, various committees, social and yachting events and Junior member activities
The main dining room, with its outstanding view of Newport Bay, features full course meals prepared and served by BYC's own chef and staff. There's also a snack bar on the lower level open during the summer. And the Burgee Bar, spectacular at sunset, is also known by yachtsmen from coast to coast for its famous firepit, which is always available after a rugged sail for "drying out.”
"Closest to the jetty" best describes BYC's choice location to the Bay entrance, making access to the ocean both fast and convenient. BYC also has an extensive mooring area on the bay directly in front of the Club. Regular shore boat service provides prompt access for members to and from their boats
Individual and Group Cruises
For those members who like to cruise, BYC has its own out-station on Catalina Island at beautiful Whites Cove. The anchorage, known as "Hen Rock" is one of the most protected on the island. Called the BYC Catalina Station, it is available to all members, complete with heads, showers, barbeques, picnic and game areas, and a broad sunbathing beach
BYC cruisers regularly take long individual and group cruises, visiting yacht clubs up and down the coast and throughout the world. Using the "reciprocity" agreement which BYC sailors enjoy, members are welcome at other facilities as visiting yacht skippers and crews are welcome at BYC
Many BYC members serve as directors of major boating associations lending their expertise to the development of properly run events, good seamanship and safety at sea
The Mission of BYC
Balboa Yacht Club is first and foremost a boating club that also offers a wide range of social activities. Since the Club’s beginning in 1922, they have maintained a reputation as a strong contender in all sailing races and regattas. The Club also has an active fleet of cruising sailors and many of the top anglers on the West Coast call BYC home
There are currently a number of different types of memberships available:
- Racing membership: serious sailboat racers (racing resume required)
- Collegiate membership: current students (16-24) who are active sailors
- Junior Flag membership: under 40 years of age. This is a step toward Full Flag (equity) Membership.
- Flag membership: equity membership for those over 40 years of age.
- Non-resident membership: sailors who live outside of the area and are already members of a yacht club.
New members are encouraged to own a boat as well as have an ongoing interest in boating. All new members are expected to support our On-the-Water activities and to participate on one of our many Club Committees
Balboa Yacht Club has a formal application process for prospective members and they are here to help you along the way
