Do you wish you had a special area in your backyard where you can relax and enjoy the outdoors?  Someplace to let the kids play that is out of the view of the neighbors?  Well, guess what?  You can!  It's easy to create your own special backyard retreat that you and your family can enjoy for years to come.  Here are some ideas to help you get started

Start Small

You may be thinking to yourself, how can I do this?  I have a huge yard with no privacy and I don't know where to begin.  The important thing to remember is not to let yourself get overwhelmed by the size of your yard, whether it is big or small.  Focus on what you already have and work from there

Pick a Location

Do you have a patio or deck?  That's a great place to begin.  If not, perhaps there is an area in your lawn that has a nice view, this can be a great place to have your backyard retreat.  Maybe your landscape already has some trees or plants that you especially like - creating a retreat around an existing landscape feature is also a great idea

Create Privacy

If the area where you want to begin is open to view to your neighbors, first focus on creating some privacy for your outdoor space.  Start with creating some walls.  Consider installing a fence on your property line.  Alternatively, you can plant trees or bushes at the fence line to create some privacy between you and your neighbors

If you have a deck or patio, you may be able to install some curtains to add a little privacy to your area and make it more cozy.  You may also want to purchase a large cantilevered umbrella.  These can be positioned anywhere and can help block the view of your neighbor's yard.  A simple trellis with a vining plant also adds privacy while adding beauty to your yard

Add Accents

Now is where you can have some fun.  Add accents to your backyard retreat that add to the coziness and make it inviting.  You can plant flowers around the perimeter of your area, or add containers full of flowers and plants.  Consider investing in some outdoor furniture.  A sofa and a chair or two covered in weather-resistant fabric encourage you and your friends to lounge and enjoy your outdoor space.  Throw blankets and pillows are great for when the weather starts to cool.  You can even add an outdoor fire pit, or scatter candles around your retreat to create an atmosphere of luxury

No matter what kind of backyard you have, with just a little imagination you can create a backyard retreat that you and your family will love
