Raise your hand if you’re ready for a break from early mornings, sack lunches, carpools, soccer practice and homework. If you and your kids need some time away from the hustle and bustle of school and work schedules, Laguna Beach offers the perfect getaway. Whether you want a little fun or some R&R, these ideas will leave you refreshed, recharged and ready to tackle the school year’s home stretch.
Spot Marine Wildlife
The coast of Laguna Beach offers some of the best whale-watching and dolphin-spotting opportunities in the country. During the spring and early summer migration season, several species of whales can be seen including blue whales, humpbacks and finback whales. Dolphins are often plentiful and will delight families with their huge, playful pods. Several outfits offer cruises including Davey’s Locker, Capt. Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Watching Safari and Dana Wharf Whale Watching.
Explore Tide Pools
There’s an entire underwater world ready to be explored off the coast of Laguna Beach. Tide pools, accessible during low tide, feature diverse and interesting ecosystems populated by a variety of marine life including sea stars, sea urchins, hermit crabs and sea anemones. Docents are available on Main Beach and Treasure Island Beach. What better way to teach your kids about the biodiversity of the ocean than with a fun, hands-on experience? Check out this video that tells you everything you need to know about the tide pool scene in Laguna Beach.
Learn About Marine Mammals
To continue with your ocean adventures, spend an afternoon learning about marine mammals at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center. This facility is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing marine mammals found along the Southern California coastline. The center hopes to inspire ocean stewardship through education and they are open to the public every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is free to visit, but donations are encouraged.
Catch Some Waves
If you’re looking for a more active experience, why not treat the family to some surfing lessons over Spring Break? Several companies in Laguna Beach offer surfing instruction to people of all ages. Spend an afternoon or an entire week learning about the coastline, understanding surf conditions and getting experience on body boards, skim boards and surf boards. Check out Soul Surfing School, La Vida Laguna or Aqua Surf School for lessons the kids can enjoy.
Relax at Home
If you live in Laguna Beach, you know that one of the best things about living here is being able to enjoy your own home as though you are on vacation 365 days a year. Take advantage of your beautiful outdoor living spaces by having a pool party or throwing a backyard barbecue, stay in for a movie night in your home theater or relax and enjoy a good book on your patio while taking in panoramic views of the ocean.
