En plein air is a French expression which means “in the open air”, and is used to describe the mode of painting outdoors. Artists have long painted outdoors, including the French Impressionist painters such as Monet and Renoir in the mid-19th century. This endearing style is a long-time favorite of Laguna Beach artists who can't help but paint in the breath-taking open air of our area's natural landscape. If you live in Laguna Beach, you may have been swept away when you've seen their paintings of familiar coastal regions and marine vistas. This week, the annual Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational will bring this art form to life with a bang near your Laguna Beach home
Presented by the Laguna Art Museum and the Laguna Beach Plein Air Painters Association, this engaging Invitational will span October 9th through the 16th, turning our beautiful seaside community and historic art center into an outdoor studio. This celebration of artistic legacy in Laguna Beach has improved its already vibrant and exciting format this year, focusing on the community, the environment and education. Fifty of the nation's top plein air landscape painters will be showcased as they participate in the week-long events such as public paint outs, the much loved Quick Draw in Heisler Park, environmental awareness activities and educational events, culminating with the Collectors' Soiree and Public Art Show & Sale at Laguna Art Museum. All events are free except for the Collector's Soiree on Saturday, October 15th. For more details on the week's schedule, click here.
