If you plan to be in Laguna Beach over the Memorial Day weekend, there are several traditional community events where you can remember and honor our nation’s military heroes as well as spend time with your friends and neighbors. What better way to kick off the summer than to spend the weekend at the beach soaking in the sun and celebrating the holiday in a meaningful way? Here’s a look at the events scheduled for the day.
Memorial Day Pancake Breakfast and Ceremony
Every year the Laguna Beach Exchange Club sponsors a breakfast in Heisler Park to commemorate Memorial Day. This year the Pancake Breakfast is scheduled to take place on Monday, May 26th, from 7am to 10:30am. Enjoy the stunning views of the Pacific Ocean while local police officers and fire fighters serve up coffee and flapjacks.
The Pancake Breakfast is the Exchange Club’s largest fundraiser, with proceeds benefiting child abuse prevention and local youth projects including the Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center. The breakfast will be held in the picnic area below the corner of Myrtle and Cliff Drives, and the cost per person is $5.
Work off those extra calories from breakfast by taking a short hike through Heisler Park. The park offers unparalleled views of the Laguna Beach coastline along a half-mile paved path. It’s an easy stroll that’s perfect for anyone in the family.
Immediately following the Pancake Breakfast will be a Memorial Day Ceremony at Monument Point, starting at 11am. The Memorial is presented and sponsored by the American Legion and the VFW to honor those who have given their lives while defending our nation. Admission is free and everyone is welcome to attend.
Memorial Day Patriotic Concert
Continue your Memorial Day festivities at the Memorial Day Patriotic Concert at the Main Beach Cobblestones. The concert will be held from 12:30pm to 2pm and feature the Laguna Concert Band. This all-volunteer, non-profit organization boasts over 65 members from Laguna Beach and the surrounding areas. The band is comprised of musicians from various performance ensembles, music instructors and professional musicians.
The Laguna Concert Band performs over 20 concerts every year with the Memorial Day Patriotic Concert being one of the most popular and well-attended of them all. Over the years smaller ensembles have formed within the band, which include two full 18 piece swing bands, a flute ensemble, a Dixieland band, a woodwind ensemble and a brass quintet. All ensembles are available for bookings and private events.
A Day of Remembrance
Memorial Day is a time of remembrance and a time for all of us to come together and honor the sacrifices others have made on behalf of our country. In a less formal way, it’s also a time to welcome the summer and the long, languid days ahead. From all of us here at The Stanaland Group, we hope you and your family have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend, full of many memory-making events and good times.
