Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of the summer season, and there are plenty of events happening in and around Laguna Beach to kick it into gear. There are also plenty of opportunities to spend time remembering and honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, which is what this holiday is truly about. Here’s a look at what’s happening in the area.
Annual Memorial Day Pancake Breakfast
Every year the Laguna Beach Exchange Club hosts this community-building event, which is the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year. Have your breakfast prepared for you by Laguna’s own police and firefighters while enjoying great views from Heisler Park. The breakfast is scheduled from 7 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 25. Price is $5 and the proceeds benefit the Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center.
American Legion/VFW Memorial Service
Following the pancake breakfast, join the Laguna Beach chapter of the American Legion/VFW as they host a memorial service at Monument Point. The service begins at 11 a.m. and is always a touching tribute to those we have lost in the defense of our country.
Memorial Day Patriotic Concert
The Laguna Beach Concert Band will continue the Memorial Day activities with a free concert featuring rousing renditions of patriotic songs. The concert will be held on Main Beach from 12:30 – 2 p.m. next to Greeter’s Corner Restaurant.
Newport Beach Wine Festival
Kicking off the summer season never tasted so good. From Friday, May 22, to Sunday, May 24, sample fine wines, beer and delicious cuisine at the Newport Beach Wine Festival. The waterfront setting at the Balboa Bay Resort provides the perfect backdrop for trying new vintages or taking a cooking or blending class. There are a variety of tasting sessions, classes and more at this annual Memorial Day weekend event. Visit their website for more information and to purchase tickets.
Kick off the Memorial Day weekend on Friday, May 22, with the Sunset Serenades. From 6:30 p.m. to sunset at the Heisler Park Amphitheatre on Cliff Drive, enjoy the jazz stylings of the Jason Harnell Trio. The concert is free and is a truly magical event that lets you enjoy the beautiful Laguna sunset with a live music soundtrack. Get there early to get a good spot, and bring a blanket or low chair and a picnic to make the most of the evening.
Love, Loss, and What I Wore
The Laguna Playhouse will be presenting Delia and Nora Ephron’s touching and funny play “Love, Loss, and What I Wore” on Memorial Day weekend (May 20 – 24). Based on the book by Nora Ephron, the play is a collection of anecdotes that use fashion to trigger stories that are close to the heart. Visit the Laguna Beach Playhouse website for more information about dates, times and tickets.
