It is about 10 miles south of downtown Santa Ana. According to the most recent census, it has some 85,000 residents. It ranks among the highest both in median income and property values. More than a quarter of households here have annual incomes above $200,000 and the median value for a house is about $1 million

In 1871, the Steamship Vaquero entered the marshy bay that is now Newport Bay to trade with the local cattle ranchers.  It was then that the name Newport was adopted

Newport Beach goes from sea level to a height of 1161 feet at the summit of Signal Peak in the San Joaquin Hills.  Huntington Beach and the Santa Ana River lie to the north as does the city of Costa Mesa and the John Wayne Airport

The current Newport Harbor was created by dredging portions of the Newport Estuary in the early 1900's.  The fill that resulted was used to create several islands that are now residential developments  The harbor used to support several maritime industries such as comercial fishing and boat building, but today it is used primarily for recreation.  The shores are lined with homes and private docks for pleasure craft.  There are some 9,000 boats now docked here making it one of the largest such facilities on the west coast.

Development here was stimulated by the Pacific Electric Railway which laid tracks into the area in 1906. connecting the region to downtown Los Angeles. The 206 residents living here at the time incorporated the zone into a city. Corona Del Mar was annexed in 1923. Newport Island, West Newport, Balboa Island, and Lido Island became neighborhoods within the city. In 2002, San Joaquin Hills, East Santa Ana Heights, and Newport Coast were added to the city.  After a lengthy dispute with the city of Costa Mesa, East Santa Heights was also annexed
