While Laguna Beach may be well-known as an artists’ colony and a place with some of the finest and most sought-after homes in the area, did you also know that our community boasts some of the best surfing beaches in Southern California? With over seven miles of coastline and several cove beaches, Laguna Beach is an excellent place to surf year-round for surfers of all levels. Here’s what you need to know to catch some tasty waves.

Surfing Beaches

No matter your level of experience, there’s a beach that’s perfect for you. Beginning and intermediate surfers will enjoy the mid-town beaches of St. Ann’s, Thalia Street and Pearl Street. For those surfers out there who are more advanced, head to the Brooks Street beach in mid-town where you’ll find larger waves and more experienced surfers out in the water. Rockpile is also a great beach for surfing, but is restricted to more advanced surfers due to the strong currents and dangerous reefs. Agate Street beach is also a popular spot for surfing, but has restricted surfing hours in the summertime.

Surfing Lessons

Are you new to surfing? No problem! There are many places in Laguna Beach that offer surfing lessons, including:

Learn the basics such as paddling techniques, surf etiquette, how to stay safe and how to stand up on the board. Many of these outfits offer lessons to kids as young as four. Private and group instruction is available, and most offer the use of equipment. Just show up and bring your sense of adventure!

Surf Shops

Looking for the latest in surf equipment and surf fashion? Laguna Beach is home to many world-famous and landmark surf shops, including:

You’ll find everything you need from wetsuits and handcrafted surfboards to the latest apparel from some of the finest surfing lifestyle brands. You might even recognize one of these shops from television – Laguna Surf and Sport was featured regularly on the MTV reality show “Laguna Beach,” where cast member Stephen was an employee.

Surf Reports

Before heading out to the beach, check the surf report so you know what to expect when you arrive. Surfline provides reports and video of several beaches in town, as well as surf-forecast.com, solspot and magicseaweed. Live beach cams also monitor the city’s beaches; you can find them at Hotel Laguna and Laguna Beach Cams.

Surfing Competitions

If you’re an accomplished surfer who would like to test your skills against surfing locals, you can go head to head at the Brooks Street Surfing Classic. The competition is open only to Laguna Beach residents and awards are given to the best in each age group and category. The competition is held at different times depending on surf conditions; check their Facebook page for updates.
